August 2010 Open Show Critique:
Judge - Mr Richard Morris [Lascoed]

Introduction

My thanks to the Committee for the honour and privilege of being invited to judge this, my first cocker spaniel breed club open show attracting a pleasing entry of 58 dogs, making 73 entries for which I thank all the participants. I should also like to extend my grateful thanks to my steward, Dr Geoffrey Curr. The two black litter brothers, together with the beautiful opposite sex bitch and most promising young black puppy, were a most satisfying, typical and attractive final line-up.

Critique

MINOR PUPPY DOG (3,0);

1st INNES - GORGEOUS SUNLIGHT AT DANYMEADE; Still in puppy coat but a very promising young golden puppy dog, excels in head and very compact, kind eye of good colour, level top line, strong bone, promising feet, well-muscled hindquarters for his age, moves soundly. A very promising youngster that just needs time.
2nd DOWNS - ZAKOVA FOOTSTEPS; Black and tan puppy, lovely strong bone and firm feet, well-defined tan, pleasing eye and expression, good top line, lovely hindquarters for age. Moved acceptably.
3rd BARRY - ZAKOVA VALENTIONO

MINOR PUPPY BITCH (4,0);

1st MacDONALD - MOONWOOD STAR IN HER EYES; An attractive blue roan bitch with a nicely-maturing head and pleasing eye, excels in well-defined stop. Good bone and feet, firm level top line, strong over the loin, muscled hindquarters but could lose weight to advantage. Moved soundly.
2nd RIHOY - SUNNERSET OVER THE RAINBOW; A quality type black, sweet head and expression with a clean overall outline. Beautifully compact and short coupled. Good strength of neck, clean and well-set into the shoulders. Good bone and feet, firm top line, well-bent stifles. Moved very well.
3rdODGERS - CARDAMINE LUNAR ECLIPSE AT ROZANKO

PUPPY DOG (3,0);

1st WORGAN - LOCHRANZA MAN ON A MISSION FOR LUTHAME; Most attractive black dog, pleasing outline, excellent type. Plenty of strength in the head, good length of muzzle, defined stop and kind, well-shaped eye. Well-set ears, strong bone and firm well-padded feet. Well-sprung rib, short coupled with plenty of strength in the hindquarters. Moved acceptably and better in the Best Puppy challenge, where he had the clear advantage over the other exhibits and I was delighted to award him "Best Puppy in Show"- Congratulations!
2nd GOSTELOW - DOMNEVA DIONYSUS; A neat black, well-balanced head with plenty of muzzle, well-padded. Good length of neck and well placed shoulders, good bone, feet well padded, excellent spring of rib, well coupled with level top line. Rather over-angulated in the stifles and did not respond well on the move.
3rd BARNES/HUTCHINSON - MASTER ARCHAVIR DREAMER

PUPPY BITCH (1,0);

1st GOSTELOW - DOMNEVA DELPHI; A compact black, good strength of muzzle, defined stop and well-shaped eye of good colour. Skull well-developed, pleasing length of neck, well placed shoulders, good bone and feet, compact with level top line. Very well-muscled hindquarters with good bend of stifle, but unfortunately moved rather erratically.

JUNIOR DOG OR BITCH (6,2);

1st GUNNING - PAULLO ARMANDI; An orange and white dog well up to size at the shoulder but a pleasing overall outline, well angulated throughout. Well balanced head with good length of muzzle and clear stop. Excellent spring of rib, level top line, strong bone and firm feet, the best mover in the class - sound and true.
2nd REED - REEMIF BLUE REFLECTION; A small blue roan bitch, compact with excellent spring of rib, clean neckline, well placed shoulders, reasonable bone and good feet, kind eye of good colour, clear stop. Rather narrow on the move.
3rd LANE/PHILLIPS - CARDAMINE SIMPLY DEXTER

SPECIAL YEARLING (5,2);

1st HICKMAN - FREESTONE FUNDAMENTALIST; A smart and appealing sable dog, well-defined lines, upstanding and strong in build. Compact, mature outline with workman-like appearance, strong bone, well-padded feet. Attractive head and expression, eyes bright and awake, ears well set, excellent spring of rib and depth of body, short coupled with good bend of stifle. Well presented in good feather, moved very soundly with pleasing tail carriage.
2nd REED - REEMIF BLUE REFLECTION
3rd SPEED - CARDAMINE HAPPY EVER AFTER

NOVICE DOG (4,1);

1st THOMAS - AFTERLIFE ENCOUNTER BY CLARAMAND; A sable and tan quality young dog with a beautiful head, well balanced, strong well-padded muzzle, well developed skull, clear defined stop and a pleasing expression. Excellent forequarters, firm front with tight elbows, deep in the brisket, strong well-boned legs with concentrated power. Lovely depth of body, good spring of rib, level top line, loin well muscled and short, good bend of stifle, moved soundly but slightly wide behind, tail well set.
2nd GOSTELOW - DOMNEVA DIONYSUS
3rd BARNES//HUTCHINSON - MASTER ARCHAVIR DREAMER

NOVICE BITCH (7,1);

1st THOMAS - ANGEL IN DISGUISE AT CLARAMAND; Another beautiful exhibit from this distinguished kennel, top quality black bitch, beautiful outline, well angulated throughout. Excels in breed type, most attractive head and expression, strong neck, compact, short coupled, firm and strong over the loins, superbly muscled hindquarters, good second thigh, well boned throughout. Tail strong at the base, of correct length, a very sound mover if again slightly wide behind but flowing, driving propulsion, moving merry. Presented in excellent coat and feather condition. Had little hesitation in awarding her "Best Opposite Sex in Show" - Congratulations!
2nd PARKER - WEYHILL SAHARA; A sweet-headed orange and white bitch, good length of neck, well placed shoulders, level top line, small and compact but needs to grow-on and strengthen overall. Moved acceptably.
3rd GOSTELOW - DOMNEVA DELPHI

GRADUATE DOG (6,2);

1stRIHOY - SUNNERSET MOONLIGHTING; Excellent breed type. A quality black with an impressive workman-like appearance, sturdy, well-balanced and quality outline. Well proportioned head, excellent length of muzzle well padded, pleasing expression, ears well set. Skull well developed, stop needs more time, could benefit from slightly more spring of rib, superbly deep bodied for his age, adequate bone, strong, firm well-padded feet. Level, firm top line with strength over the loin although could be a shade shorter in the couplings. Well muscled hindquarters, strong second thigh, good bend of stifle, short below the hocks. Moved very soundly and true both fore and aft with a merry tail action if slightly raised. His many breed qualities and true type caused me to have no hesitation in awarding him "Reserve Best in Show" - Congratulations!
2ndHICKMAN - FREESTONE FUNDAMENTALIST
3rdDRIVER - BECKABY LUNAR SHADOW

GRADUATE BITCH (3,0);

1st REED - REEMIF BLUE REFLECTION
2ndROBERTS/SMITH - RAYOL ARILIA; A black bitch with a pleasing head and expression, good bone and feet, excellent spring of rib, well bent stifles, straight front and strong hindquarters. Rather lacking in scope overall and a little too compact.
3rdSPEED - CARDAMINE MATILDA

POST GRADUATE DOG (5,3);

1st MOORAT - SUNNERSET MOONLIGHT DANCER; Litter brother to the winner of Graduate Dog, the same excellent breed type, strong appearance and refined quality. Striking workman-like presence, beautifully balanced head, well chiselled with good length and strength of muzzle, and defined stop. Most pleasing expression, ears well set of good length. Slightly throaty at present but this does not detract from a strong, clean neckline and excellent angulation throughout. Slightly better boned than his brother with strong pasterns both front and rear, and firm well-padded feet. Lovely spring of rib, deep bodied, short coupled, firm, strong top line, plenty of width and strength over the loin, well bent stifles, excellent muscled hindquarters with deep second thigh, hock joints strong, rear pasterns well let down. Moved powerfully with drive, very sound and true both front and rear. His tail also could be carried slightly lower but he has a merry disposition and a lovely character. Excelling as he does in breed type and quality, and, though pushed hard by his brother, I felt he had sufficient edge to award him "Best in Show - Congratulations!
2ndHARTNETT - GLENNTREE GRENADIER; A compact black, well balanced head, good muzzle, stop and well-developed skull, strong bone and firm feet, plenty of width and strength over the loin. Would benefit from rather more spring of rib and could be more settled in rear movement

POST GRADUATE BITCH (3,1);

1st REED - REEMIF BLUE REFLECTION
2nd ROBERTS/SMITH - CARDAMINE GUILDED SILVER; Compact bitch, pleasing head, good length of neck and well placed shoulders, well sprung rib, short coupled with level top line, plenty of depth of body, strong bone, firm feet and well muscled hindquarters. For me, rather over-angulated stifles and hind rear movement could be better

LIMIT DOG (5,2);

1st HARRIS - MELGROVE CARBON COPY; A black dog well up to size at the shoulder of solid firm construction and good breed type and outline. Lovely balanced head, kind well-shaped eye with soft expression, excellent spring of rib, deep bodied, strong bone and firm well-padded feet. Compact body, short coupled and strong over the loin, very well muscled hindquarters with powerful second thigh. Moved very soundly and true.
2ndDRIVER - COURTMASTER TOTEM BY BECKABY; A blue roan dog with the most delightful head and expression, lovely muzzle, defined stop and the kindest of eyes. Clean, flowing neckline, strong and placed into well set shoulders, firm, level top line, very compact, good spring of rib, well bent stifles, strong bone and feet. A most pleasing type overall.
3rdHUTSON - MOONWOOD PIRATE KING AT STOBYTILL

LIMIT BITCH (5,3);

1st MacDONALD - MOONWOOD GINGER SPICE; A merry, sturdy, bustling orange and white bitch, compact and well-balanced, quality head with lovely expression, good muzzle, stop and eye, clean, strong neck, well angulated throughout. Plenty of width in front, deep brisket, strong bone and splendid feet. Level top line, short coupled, excellent muscled hindquarters with strong second thigh, well let down below the hocks. A very typical cocker, moved soundly but did not give of her best in the "Best in Show" challenge.
2ndREED - REEMIF BLUE REFLECTION

OPEN DOG (5,2);

1st ROBERTS/SMITH - RAYOL SPANISH GOLD WITH JOZELAH; A very close decision between first and second in this class. A golden dog, beautifully balanced throughout, strong, muscled, masculine appearance, sturdy and compact. Plenty of strength and finish in the head, chiselling and a lovely kind expression. Strong bone, firm feet well padded, level top line, short over the loin, good depth of body, bend of stifle and strong powerful hindquarters. Moved very soundly indeed with good tail carriage, presented in beautiful coat condition and feather.
2ndTUOHY/WILLIAMS - CLARAMAND MORSE CODE TO ARRIFANA JW ShCM; A top quality dog of excellent breed type. This dog also shared many of the virtues of the winner of this class, particularly his sturdy compactness, overall angulation and balance, strong bone, feet and breed outline. For me, he was slightly lacking in strength of muzzle though he moved more freely than the winner. Excellent overall condition and beautifully presented coat and feather trimmed to perfection.
3rdFAJARDO - GLOWHILL YOUNG GUN AT SAN MATAYO

OPEN BITCH (4,1);

1st DRIVER - SPRINGSTEIN STARS DELIGHT AT BECKABY; A blue roan of excellent breed type, a pleasing outline, well constructed throughout without any exaggerations, superb spring of rib, strong bone, firm feet, level top line, good bend of stifles and moved soundly. Again, I felt she too would benefit from slightly more strength in the muzzle.
2ndTUOHY/WILLIAMS - CLARAMAND ON ICE WITH ARRIFANA; A black bitch, pleasing head well proportioned and developed, kind expression, good eye colour, ears well set, good spring of rib, strong over the loin, good depth of body and exceptionally well presented in good coat and feather, tending slightly to upright in shoulder and movement behind could have been better.
3rdFAJARDO - GLOWHILL BELLA MARIA AT SAN MATAYO
